Kurush Mistry, a highly skilled commodities analyst, was raised and educated in India at the most prestigious management school in the country. He has adeptly navigated significant changes throughout his successful career at top organizations. Alongside his professional pursuits, Kurush deeply loves music, enjoys exploring new places, and proudly identifies as a New Yorker. After obtaining his Commerce degree in Chennai, India, Kurush became a Chartered Accountant, excelling in all three qualifying exams and achieving top rankings.
With a strong foundation in finance, he pursued an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. During this time, he learned about the latest business concepts, collaborated with peers from diverse educational backgrounds, and honed his problem-solving and communication skills. Kurush's professional journey began in 2003 when he joined Lehman Brothers in Tokyo after completing his MBA. He was selected to join their team for Interest Rate Strategies, where he gained valuable experience working in an international corporate environment, applying his financial expertise to real-world situations, and immersing himself in a different culture.
In 2005, he moved to Lehman's New York office, where he worked with the award-winning Interest Rate Strategies team until 2008. During this time, Kurush managed a diverse portfolio of products, including US Government Bonds and Interest Rate Derivatives. He built a strong reputation among Lehman's clients in the US, including central banks, mortgage companies, and pension funds.
2009 following the financial crisis, Kurush shifted his career and joined Morgan Stanley, a leading oil-trading firm, where he worked on their US gasoline and diesel physical trading team. Here, he utilized his analytical skills, collaborated with traders to develop profitable strategies, and gained valuable experience in physical and paper gasoline trading. This brief period in trading has given him a unique perspective in his analytical work and enables him to engage in meaningful discussions with his trader clients. In 2014, Kurush joined Freepoint Commodities as their sole Oil analyst and has significantly contributed to developing their global oil analytics framework. He has incorporated alternative data into the analysis, particularly in a post-Covid world.
From 2014 to 2023, he closely collaborated with over 25 traders, providing them with market intelligence, supply-demand forecasts, and trade ideas for various products in the Oil industry, such as crushing crude, LPG, gasoline, fuel oil, and refinery margins. In 2022, his expertise expanded to include renewable fuels and feedstocks, including ethanol, biodiesel, renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuels, and US soybean oil. Throughout his career, Kurush has shown a strong interest in recruiting, mentoring, and training junior colleagues, helping them advance.
He takes great pride in seeing them grow into senior positions at prestigious organizations. Since 2005, Kurush has been living in New York and feels at home in the fast-paced and diverse city. He takes advantage of its rich cultural opportunities despite his busy schedule. He also finds comfort in listening to music and playing his guitar and has a keen interest in reading non-fiction, politics, and traveling. He has visited various historical, cultural, and natural beauty destinations. In 2009, Kurush had a unique opportunity to produce a low-budget feature film set in New York, collaborating with a team of inexperienced co-creators.
Although the film received moderate critical acclaim, the experience was stimulating and challenging. It took him out of his comfort zone and exposed him to a different industry and the complexities of running a small business. Committed to giving back to the community, Kurush actively donates to several charities focused on hunger, refugees, legal aid, and the environment.
